The Devil’s Arrows

The arrows consist of three stones with the Southern most stone being the second tallest standing stone in the UK

Until about a fortnight ago I only knew the North Yorkshire market town of Boroughbridge for two things. The first being that it had a Morrisons. The second being that when I went to a dentist there as a teenager, I was told my teeth were ‘hunky dory’.

Then when browsing my local library I uncovered a 1969 book entitled, Yorkshire’s Mine by Norrie Ward. In it Norrie details The Devil’s Arrows of Boroughbridge located on the bank of the river Ure and just off the A1. The arrows consist of three stones with the Southern most stone being the second tallest standing stone in the UK and according to J.S. Fletcher (1908) have excited ‘sightseers for centuries.’ I feel rather silly for overlooking such a site on my doorstep in the North East.
