Avebury

Children of the Stones, which used this megalithic landmark as location for its otherworldly storyline.

I made a day trip to Avebury after watching the cult 70s TV series Children of the Stones, which used this megalithic landmark as location for its otherworldly storyline. It was a blowy day. Sheep and clouds simultaneously rolled across the landscape. I had packed a pinhole camera but no anorak, so my photos were rather rushed as I braced tripod and self against the wind. But they captured the spirit of the place nonetheless - its eeriness and chthonic grandeur. Avebury Manor had the ominous air of another cult film location, Ken Russell’s The Lair of the White Worm. As I left I even thought I saw a fanged Amanda Donohoe staring out from an upstairs window.
