The Duddo Five stones

I’ve visited many circles and I’ve never felt such a sense of wonder than at this one

The Duddo Five stones are in North Northumberland 4 miles or so from the Scottish border.

I’ve lived in the NE for years but had never visited them. A friend and I set off on a rainy cold day and arrived at the end of a farmer’s track where we parked.

Like magic, the sun broke through as we walked down the path towards the stones. There was even a rainbow!

The stones are much eroded after standing for millennia and two are missing, but they are just stunning. They stand where you can see for miles toward the Cheviots and across to Scotland.

Archaeological investigations have discovered evidence of cremation burials in the centre of the stones, but I can’t find much else that is written about them.

I’ve visited many circles and I’ve never felt such a sense of wonder than at this one. Can’t wait to visit again
