Carreg Samson

Legend says the enormous 4.7m long,  2.7 m wide, 1 m thick capstone was gently placed by local Saint Samson of Dol with just his little finger.

Carreg Samson on the North Pembrokeshire coast near Abercastle. The burial mound is long gone and sheep shelter in the stone structure for protection.

Legend says the enormous 4.7m long,  2.7 m wide, 1 m thick capstone was gently placed by local Saint Samson of Dol with just his little finger.

We approached the dolmen, walking into a bitter February wind, whipping off the sea.

The placement of the capstone belies comprehension - a product of sophisticated physics not Christian magic.

The sun broke through as we left the stones to the wind.
