Netherton of Logie

It is the circle that is the original ground surface level, and it is the surrounding fields that have fallen away, slowly being lowered year after year, decade after decade of ploughing which effectively redistributes, spreads out, and flattens the field level

Netherton of Logie is a beautiful and well kept site with very easy access. it has a south-facing recumbent setting, which is typical of the design and, is indeed, an identifier of this type of stone circle.

According to Great Crowns of Stone (GCoS), the circle has had some restoration work, resulting in a few of the cairn kerbstones being resited next to the circle stones.

The circle appears to have been raised on a platform around one meter high with a retaining stone wall all the way around the monument, however, it is the circle that is the original ground surface level, and it is the surrounding fields that have fallen away, slowly being lowered year after year, decade after decade of ploughing which effectively redistributes, spreads out, and flattens the field level, the retaining wall is to prevent the monument from falling into the field, this is very common with stone circles that are located in serviced fields.

The traditional numbering for a recumbent stone circle starts with the recumbent setting, often called the alter, with the number one stone always being the standing stone directly next to and West of the recumbent stone, the large long stone on its side. From there, the numbering runs anticlockwise so the recumbent stone is always number two and the east standing stone next to the recumbent is always number three, these standing stones that are either side of the recumbent are usually called the flankers. Netherton has seven standing stones and one fallen as part of the circle as well as a further ten medium standing stones thought to be kerbstones and perhaps a couple of circle stones that have been pushed up near the recumbment setting.

Site location - What3Words ///menu.oiled.offstage or digital coordinates 57.604908 -1.928870, the farm yard has a shop so there's plenty of parking and they are very much encourage visitors to the monument.

I have been lucky to visit all 73 recumbent stone circles, and I put together a wee blog for my own personal use; however, I am happy if others want to use it for location references, parking spots, etc.

Recently, I started doing single-take walkthrough videos, and I started to gather these in a Youtube channel.
