These weathered french rocks are relatively young, in geological terms (30 million years ago), and form spectacular domes, cracks, curves, and polygonal grooves.
Lit by a sun that's speaking of the summer season - and among bare oaks, the scent of scots pines, and the bustle of brown beech leaves - lies a chaos of eroded sandstone boulders.
These weathered french rocks are relatively young, in geological terms (30 million years ago), and form spectacular domes, cracks, curves, and polygonal grooves.
The magical forest of Fontainebleau is also home to many rock shelters with puzzling engravings - made up of repetitive geometric patterns - dated to the Mesolithic period.
These, I've yet to find. But until then, I'll continue to climb up, sit upon, and admire these ancient pleasing stones.
