Book of the Month October 2023

The Pattern Under the Plough

A vanishing world is captured by George Ewart Evans in The Pattern Under the Plough. Lost voices, customs, superstitions and trades of East Anglia are all recorded in its pages. Originally published in 1966 by Faber & Faber it has rarely been out of print since such is its pull; Evans conjures a vivid picture of a now almost entirely forgotten place and time using the voices of working people. There’s much to learn about hag stones and other totemic objects, and agricultural techniques and how folklore and science are woven together. It is a deeply moving book that offers up an opportunity to learn from and about our ancestors.
