Book of the Month February 2025

Between Worlds

This month’s book of the month is Ithell Colquhoun: Between Worlds. The companion catalogue to the exhibition of the same name that opened at Tate St Ives this month.

Ithell Colquhoun lived and worked in Lamorna in West Penwith in Cornwall, and she has long held a fascination for us here at Stone Club HQ. Our first ever book of the month was The Living Stones, Ithell’s magical travelogue about the stones, folklore and landscape of Cornwall (on another note this has finally been republished by Pushkin Press).

Between Worlds is the first ever full-colour comprehensive look at Ithell’s painting, writing and magical activities. It not only contains many images which were completely new to us but old favourites too such as Landscape with Antiquities and Sunset Birth - both of which reference the ancient sites of West Penwith. It gives brilliant insight into this intriguing artist’s work with essays from curator Katy Norris, biographers Amy Hale and Richard Shillitoe, and researchers Emma Sharples and Jacqui Mcintosh amongst many others. It is a beautiful book which we are no doubt will provide us with much inspiration in the years ahead.
